A month-by-month plan from cold start to filed petition

Applicants often ask how long the EB1A journey takes. Filing itself is one week. Building a petition-ready record is twelve months, at minimum, for most professionals. This is the roadmap that fits into a normal working life.

The plan below assumes you already meet the fundamentals  recognized expertise, publications or contributions, some level of external visibility. If not, treat this as an 18-24 month plan instead.

Your 12-Month EB1A Preparation Roadmap

Months 1-2: Blueprint and audit

Define your field precisely. Draft your three-sentence extraordinary-ability answer. Inventory every piece of existing evidence — media, awards, memberships, publications, patents, adoption metrics, letters. Score each against the criteria to identify strengths and gaps. Choose the criteria you will target.

Months 3-5: Gap closure

Focus on the two or three criteria you plan to strengthen most:

  • Book at least one substantive scholarly-standard article in a credible outlet.
  • Secure two legitimate judging assignments  journal review, program committee, or grant review.
  • Line up membership tier upgrades where you qualify.
  • Pursue one credible independent media placement about your work.

Months 6-8: Sustained-acclaim building

This is where you fix the timeline problem that sinks most petitions. Refresh older recognitions by publishing follow-ups or updates. Anchor early-career contributions to current impact. Line up one or two independent recommenders who can attest to years of standing, not just recent activity. Do not compress evidence-building into a final quarter spread it.

Months 9-10: Draft and letters

Draft the petition letter. Brief each recommender with a clear lane and specific facts to attest to. Collect final letters. Assemble evidence exhibits and index them cleanly. Have a peer or attorney review the narrative for consistency and blueprint alignment.

Months 11-12: File

Finalize evidence organization, complete Form I-140, and file with premium processing where appropriate. Prepare a response plan in case an RFE arrives. Track receipt notices and case status weekly.

Bottom line: Twelve months turns a strong résumé into a petition-ready record. The applicants who wait for readiness never file. The ones who follow a plan do.

FIVE MOVES TO START THIS MONTH

  • Write your three-sentence answer this week; the plan flows from there.
  • Inventory existing evidence and score against the criteria before doing anything new.
  • Focus on two or three criteria you will materially strengthen, not all ten.
  • Spread evidence across the year  do not compress into a final quarter.
  • Line up recommenders three months before filing, not two weeks.
